LPG Safety Guide

Are you going to camp at a festival, enjoy Britain’s waterways in a canal boat or go for a caravan break? You may well need to use LPG s remember to follow these LPG safety measures on your summer holiday.

LPG Safety

LPG (Liquefied petroleum gas) is commonly used outdoors in camping equipment, barbecues and patio heaters. It is also used in some dwellings such as caravans, boats, cabins and rural homes away from the mains gas supply. If you rent out a dwelling to someone – even if only for a short time – you will be classed as a landlord and have certain legal duties regarding gas safety.

Fixed appliances

• Fixed LPG appliances must be serviced, and safety checked annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer. The engineer must be specifically qualified to work on both your property type and your appliance.
• When buying a gas appliance, you should check it is suitable for the intended location (e.g. on a boat) and the type of gas it uses (LPG or natural gas). It must, of course, be installed by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
• We also highly recommend you install a carbon monoxide alarm.

Portable appliances

When using a portable appliance with a gas canister:

• Check its condition before use. If the gas canister or its seal looks damaged, don’t use it.
• Read the operating instructions before use.
• Make sure that you have the right type of gas canister for your appliance
• Never force the gas canister retaining lever. It could damage the pressure relief system.
• Do not light the appliance if you can smell or hear gas. Call a Gas Safe engineer to check it out.
• On a boat, stow canisters and the stove, in a self-draining gas locker or in the open air.
