Having A Gas Appliance Fitted?

Having A Gas Appliance Fitted?

Having a gas appliance fitted in your home? Here are a few things to check before the work starts…

Having A Gas Appliance Fitted – Getting a quote

  • Contact a Gas Safe registered business such as L&W Heating and Plumbing for advice.
  • Ask for a quote from several different businesses. You’ll need to include details such as the work to be carried out, the materials to be used, the appliance make and model and its location in the home.
  • Can the businesses provide references from previous customers?
  • Check that the business has public liability insurance.

Having A Gas Appliance Fitted – Before the Work Starts

Once you’ve chosen an engineer, ask them to confirm the job in writing, with the following details:

  • Names, addresses and contact details.
  • The agreed price, what work it covers, the methods of payment available.
  • Start date and duration of the work.
  • Confirmation that the business is going to notify the Local Authority Building Control of any relevant works.
  • The actual work to be undertaken, the appliances supplied and the materials to be used.
  • Details of any sub-contractors that will be used (including their Gas Safe registration number).
  • Who will carry out any remedial work if necessary, and waste disposal arrangements?
  • After sales service: warranties on the appliances, materials and workmanship.
  • Make sure you check the engineer has a valid Gas Safe ID card and is qualified to carry out the work.

Having A Gas Appliance Fitted – After the work is completed:

  • The engineer should give you commissioning documents, such as a Benchmark certificate for a boiler.
  • Your warranty registration has to be completed and returned.
  • In England or Wales, the engineer must notify the installation to your Local Authority.
  • Make sure you’re happy with the work, and it has been completed as agreed before making payment.
