Following the successful Gas Safety Week campaign at the end of September Gas Safe have released a new video which highlights carbon monoxide as a silent killer we all should be aware of.

For Gas Safety Week, the Gas Safe Register did a survey that found people are far more likely to own a smoke alarm than an audible carbon monoxide (CO) alarm. This is despite the fact that CO is called “the silent killer” as it cannot be seen, tasted or smelled. You are at risk of CO poisoning if a gas appliance is unsafe. When 2000 adults in the UK were surveyed, only one in five knew that you can’t easily tell if a gas appliance is leaking carbon monoxide compared to the 30% who thought that CO could be seen tasted or smelled.

To mark Gas Safety Week, Gas Safe Register created a video to demonstrate the dangers of carbon monoxide.

Steps to Gas Safety

Gas Safe Register recommends that you get all your gas appliances checked annually to ensure they are working safely and efficiently, and follow these steps:

1. Only use Gas Safe registered engineers
2. Check the back of your engineer’s Gas Safe Register card to confirm that they’re qualified to work on the gas appliances you have
3. Every year, get your gas appliances serviced and safety checked
4. Familiarise yourself with the signs of CO poisoning;
   1. Dizziness
   2. Headaches
   3. Nausea
   4. Breathlessness
   5. Collapse
   6. Loss of consciousness.
5. Check your appliances for black stains and marks
6. Fit a carbon monoxide alarm
