Figures from this summer’s gas safety checks have revealed that 18% more unsafe gas appliances found in the hotter months than during the winter.

Almost 1,300 sites were found to be unsafe by Gas Safe Register’s inspectors during the summer. The number of places where dangerous gas appliances were found was 18% higher than the number of unsafe sites that are found during the winter months. Despite this, a recent survey of 2,000 UK adults found that one in five people only consider getting their gas appliances checked at the point they stopped working instead of having an annual safety check.

Dangers of unsafe Gas Appliances

Unsafe gas appliances are extremely dangerous. They can cause leaks of gas, fires, explosions and the silent killer: carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Dangerous has appliances were the cause of over 200 call outs to the fire and rescue services in the last year. In order to keep the UK gas safe, Gas Safe Register is asking people to have their gas appliances safety checked by a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer if it has been more than 1 months since they were last checked over by a professional.

To stay gas safe this summer, there are some simple pieces of advice:

• Learn the symptoms of CO poisoning, which are: headaches, breathlessness, nausea, collapse, dizziness and eventually loss of consciousness.
• If you suspect a gas leak or you can smell gas in your home, call the 24-hour national gas emergency number for free immediately: 0800 111 999.
• Only ever employ qualified Gas Safe registered engineers for gas work in your home.
• Never try to work on a gas appliance yourself.
