Boiler breakdowns are rise when freezing temperatures hit the UK. Here are our top tips to avoid heating disasters this winter…

Avoid Heating Disasters at Home

Here is some sensible advice to keep your heating in good condition.

Bleed your radiators

Bleeding radiators ensure they are working correctly. If the radiators have cold spots at the top, it means you have air in the system and you need to bleed them.

Cold spots in the bottom of the radiator may indicate a sludge build up that necessitates system flushing. Bleeding the radiator can result in pressure dropping, so make sure the boiler is at the correct pressure and top it up if necessary.

Love your boiler

Check the boiler works properly before winter comes. The older the boiler, the more inefficient it is going to be. If you have a pressure gauge, check that it is at the right pressure and top it up if needed.

Block the breeze

Make sure all your windows and doors don’t let warm air escape. For those that have gaps, fit a draught excluder, which can be bought from a DIY store.

Stay safe with a CO alarm

It is important to have a carbon monoxide alarm and to test it regularly.

Wrap up the water tank

The materials to wrap a water tank can be purchased from DIY stores – it will save heat and save money.

Insulate pipes to prevent them from bursting

Burst pipes are a big problem in the winter, and one of the most dreaded disasters. To prevent burst pipes, ensure they are insulated with lagging, which is cheap and available at DIY shops.

Budget better with a smart meter

Why not ask your energy supplier to fit a smart meter? You’ll be able to see in real-time how much energy you’re using.
